Orangescrum Open Source Community Edition Released: Free Self-Hosted Project Management Software

Orangescrum Community Edition is now open source. It is free project management software that you host on your own servers, published under the GNU AGPL v3 with no seat limit and no paid tier. The first public release, v0.1.0, went out on 11 August 2026, and the source is on GitHub.

Read it, change it, and run it for as many people as you like.

Source code: github.com/Orangescrum/opensource-community-edition

The release at a glance

  • Version: v0.1.0, first public release

  • Released: 11 August 2026

  • Licence: GNU AGPL v3

  • Cost: Free. No seat limit, no expiry

  • Hosting: Self-hosted only, on your infrastructure

  • Stack: CakePHP 4, PHP 8.2+, PostgreSQL 16, Apache (Nginx supported)

  • Deployment: Docker, Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, RHEL, Rocky, Windows, macOS, AWS AMI, from source

  • Support: Community: GitHub issues and a Google Group. No SLA

Why are we open-sourcing it?

Orangescrum is built on open source. CakePHP runs the application. PostgreSQL stores every row. PHP executes all of it. None of those sent us an invoice.

Publishing our own source under a copyleft licence is how we pay part of that back.

There is a second reason, and it is about our customers rather than us. Over fifteen years we have kept meeting teams who cannot use a hosted tool. A hospital. A bank. A defence supplier. A government department. Their rules do not permit project data to sit on infrastructure they cannot inspect. Those teams do not want a longer security questionnaire. They want to read the code and run it themselves.

Now they can, at no cost.

How to Evaluate Government Projects with Transparency

Government departments today operate under intense public scrutiny. Citizens expect clear accountability, oversight bodies demand audit-ready documentation, and leadership needs real-time visibility into how public funds and government projects are performing.

Yet many government projects still rely on spreadsheets, emails, and disconnected tools. The result?

  • Delayed reporting

  • Poor traceability

  • Cost overruns discovered too late

  • Difficult and time-consuming audits

This is where centralized project management software becomes a critical enabler of transparency. By bringing planning, execution, reporting, and governance into one system, government agencies can move from reactive reporting to proactive accountability.

What Is Centralized Project Management in Government?

Centralized project management means managing all projects, programs, and portfolios from a single platform rather than across disconnected tools.

How to Choose the Best Project Management Tool for Your Business

Nearly 70% of projects fail to hit deadlines or budgets. Not because teams don’t work hard, but because they lack the right system to manage priorities, communication, and accountability. A Project Management Tool solves that by bringing everything into one place.

Today’s businesses can’t afford to run projects with spreadsheets, sticky notes, or endless email threads. They need a digital hub that handles task management, time tracking, client updates, and collaboration seamlessly. In this blog, we’ll explore the top pain points businesses face, why a Project Management Tool is the solution, and how to choose the best one for your needs.

Why Companies Struggle Without a Project Management Tool

Teams that skip proper Project Management Software usually run into the same recurring frustrations. Here are the most common pain points:

  1. Missed deadlines due to poor planning.

  2. Scattered communication across email, chat, and calls.

  3. No visibility into real-time progress or bottlenecks.

Best Practices for Remote Team Communication During Projects

Did you know that poor communication costs businesses an estimated $37 billion annually worldwide? Remote work has amplified this challenge. With teams scattered across different locations and time zones, the ability to collaborate effectively can make or break a project’s success. That’s why using Project Collaboration Software is no longer optional — it’s essential.

In this blog, we’ll explore the best practices for remote team communication during projects. You’ll learn how to overcome the biggest communication barriers, discover actionable strategies, and see how the right tools streamline teamwork.

Business Relevance: Why Remote Communication Defines Success

Strong communication is the backbone of any project. For remote teams, it becomes even more critical because face-to-face conversations are replaced with chat threads, emails, or video calls. Without the right framework, misunderstandings, delays, and missed deadlines quickly pile up.

Companies should care because:

  • Productivity drops when teams don’t share updates consistently.

  • Client trust erodes when miscommunication delays deliverables.

  • Costs increase due to duplicated tasks, missed priorities, or rework.

Industries like IT services, marketing agencies, consulting firms, and construction management face these challenges daily. For example:

  • A marketing agency managing multiple campaigns risks chaos without a central hub for updates.

  • A construction company struggles with real-time status tracking when engineers and field workers don’t have aligned updates.

  • A tech startup loses agility if remote developers can’t coordinate sprints and backlog tasks smoothly.

This is exactly where Project Collaboration Software steps in. It centralizes updates, integrates communication, and ensures everyone has clarity, no matter where they are.

Top Metrics to Measure Team Productivity in Projects

Did you know that only 21% of organizations have standardized methods for measuring team productivity in their projects? That means most teams are making critical decisions based on gut feelings rather than data. In today’s competitive market, relying on guesswork is a recipe for missed deadlines, bloated budgets, and frustrated teams.

This is where Project Management Software changes the game. With built-in analytics, tracking tools, and automated reporting, you can measure productivity with precision — and more importantly, act on it in real time.

In this blog, we’ll explore the top metrics every project leader should track to measure team productivity. You’ll also learn best practices, real-world examples, and how the right Project Management Tool can help you turn these numbers into better results.

Business Relevance & Why It Matters

Productivity in projects isn’t just about working harder — it’s about working smarter. Businesses that track the right metrics are 28% more likely to hit their project goals and 2.5x more likely to stay on budget (Source: PMI).

12 Project KPIs Every PM Should Master for Better Results

Do you feel like your project updates are more reactive than strategic? You’re not alone. In today’s fast-moving work environment, project managers must do more than just keep things moving — they need to steer the ship with clarity and data.

Tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) is what separates high-performing project teams from the rest. However, many PMs still rely on outdated spreadsheets or fragmented data.

This blog breaks down the 12 must-track KPIs for modern project success. With the right project management software, you’ll turn real-time data into actionable insights that boost productivity and keep your teams aligned. Let’s dive in.

Business Relevance & Why It Matters

Tracking KPIs isn’t just about ticking boxes. It’s about visibility, accountability, and decision-making.

When project managers leverage KPIs effectively, they can:

  • Spot delays before they become derailments

  • Keep stakeholders informed without drowning in manual reports

  • Optimize resources, reduce costs, and drive better outcomes

Without proper KPIs, teams work in the dark. Imagine allocating resources to the wrong task or missing deadlines simply because the warning signs weren’t tracked.

Use cases:

  • A software development team uses Time Tracking Software to measure time per task and improve sprint accuracy.

  • A marketing agency relies on Task Management Software to track billable vs. non-billable hours.

  • A construction firm monitors cost variance with Work Management Software to stay on budget.

Smart KPI tracking turns your Project Management Tool into a command center for success.

Delivering Content on Time: Orangescrum’s Role in Content Marketing Teams

Content marketing is a big part of every successful business. Whether you're writing blog posts, creating social media posts, or creating email newsletters, delivering your content on time is super important. But for many teams, staying on track feels hard . Tight deadlines, unexpected changes, and busy schedules can cause problems.

Missed deadlines can hurt your business. They can mean lost sales, lower returns on investment, and missing chances to connect with your audience. So, how can you avoid this? With the right tools, like Orangescrum, you can control your content creation process, fix problems quickly, and ensure that your content is delivered on time.

Challenges in Getting Content Out On Time

Delivering content on time isn’t always easy.

Behind every blog or campaign, there are several steps: brainstorming, writing, editing, designing, and approvals.
If even one step is delayed, the whole project can get messed up.

Here are some common problems content teams face:

1. Unclear Responsibilities When team members don’t know exactly what they’re supposed to do, tasks get delayed. People might do the same work twice or forget things.

2. Hard to Track Progress Without being able to see how tasks are going, managers might not know if the team is on track. Problems might only show up when it’s almost too late.

3. Last-Minute Changes In content marketing, changes happen a lot. A client might ask for edits, or new goals could change the plan. These last-minute updates can mess up the whole schedule.

4 . Bad Communication In remote or hybrid teams, communication can be tricky. Missing messages, using different tools, and not updating everyone can slow things down.

5 . Long Approval Processes Sometimes, content needs approval from several people. If this step isn’t organized, it can delay things and cause frustration.
